Belarus is a country in Europe bordered by Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia. The area of Belarus was part of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and with most of Poland was annexed to Russia in late 1700s. After WWI, Belarus was split between Poland and the Soviet Union. After WWII, the western areas of Belarus were joined with the Soviet republic of Belarus, which achieved independence in 1991. The official languages are Belarusian and Russian.[1]
