What is the Wiki?[edit | edit source]

- Allows collaborative editing by its users
- Typically does not require editing in HTML
- Usually has both internal and external links
Wikis were named from the Hawaiian word "wiki" meaning "quick" because they allow instant updates.

- Original material was from the old Family History Library research outlines
- Users add material in their areas of genealogical expertise
- It is constantly being updated by missionaries and other volunteers as new material is discovered or released
Why is there a need for the FamilySearch Wiki?[edit | edit source]
The FamilySearch Wiki is focused on where genealogical materials are located and how to get access to them.
- Materials that ARE in FamilySearch.org or any other online genealogy site.
- Materials that ARE NOT in FamilySearch.org or any other online genealogy site.
- Materials that have been up to this time unknown or newly discovered and are now available.
- Techniques how to find and researching genealogical records.
- The site’s content is not only for beginners but also for even the most experienced researcher.
How Do I Get Into the Wiki?[edit | edit source]
Here are some methods to get to the Wiki
- Type "wiki.familysearch.org" into the address bar of your browser.
- Go to FamilySearch.org and hover your pointer over "Search." You will notice "Research Wiki" at the bottom of the drop down list.
- Type a specific country, followed by "genealogy," in your search engine. Then select the familysearch wiki item in the search results.
- You might also consider creating a bookmark on your browser toolbar or a shortcut icon on your monitor so you can go to the Wiki with one click.[1]

- ↑ To create a Windows shortcut icon, go to the URL at the top of your screen and left click the little paddle lock with https;//familysearch.org...... While holding down the left button on your mouse, drag the URL to a spot on your monitor and let up on the mouse. An icon should appear on the screen. To put it somewhere else, drag the icon to where you want it on your screen. For Apple/Mac Users: place your mouse on the URL and drag it to a spot on your desktop. Voila! An icon will appear on the screen.
